Today after church we went to a hot air balloon festival.
One of our friends has a band and they were playing out there, so we went to see them, then when they were done we waited around all afternoon because the balloon launch wasn't until 7pm. My brother and dad drove home and back, an hour each way, because there was nobody at home to take the dogs outside and we had been gone since early in the morning. It had been hot and bright all day while we were waiting, then slowly it started to cool down, then the sky filled with clouds. They were just starting to inflate the balloons, which was very exciting to watch, when they got the news that a storm was coming. We could see lightning in the distance and it was coming our way, so they put all of the balloons away because they didn't want to risk putting them up if a storm was coming, and we drove all the way home again. We got the news that it was cancelled right when Dad and Kevin got back from their drive, so they felt like they had wasted their time, and we had wasted the whole afternoon waiting for something that never happened.
Well, it was still fun to see the band play, and it was nice after it started to cool down. The kids had fun on the playground. So disappointing, though. I love hot air balloons.
I may not get to answer the rest of the questions you guys left for me. In one week my brother and I are going to Worldview Academy Leadership Camp for a week, and it is also the week of the Make Believe blog event (look at the button on my sidebar, I'm too tired to put a link), so I have to prepare my Peter Pan posts and pack for camp and I have some other stuff going on as well. I'm sorry if I didn't get to your question!

Sherlock Holmes

I love Sherlock Holmes! I gave a speech in my class (the first speech I ever had to give) about Sherlockians, people who pretend that the stories are real and study the events from a biographical point of view. They will apply Holmes' methods of deductive reasoning to figure out a timeline for his life and when certain events in the stories happened. They say that Dr. Watson actually wrote the stories as an account of real events, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was just his literary agent.
The short story collections are fantastic. I own the complete Sherlock Holmes collection, including the novels, in two old battered volumes so I can read them comfortably. I also received the New Annotated Sherlock Holmes (just the short stories, pictured above) for Christmas last year. The footnotes in that edition are written from the Sherlockian point of view, so they talk about Sherlock as if he is a real person, and attribute any inconsistencies to printer's errors, or to Watson deliberately changing the dates to protect the innocent. It is very interesting to read.
The writing in these stories is excellent. Most of them are from Watson's point of view, two are 'written' by Sherlock himself, and at least one is told in the ambiguous third person. The style of the writing is simple compared to many other Victorian authors, Charles Dickens or Elizabeth Gaskell, for example, but it is very effective. The descriptions are vivid and the words flow. It is easier to get into the story and momentarily forget that you are reading at all. It feels like you are there with them, or like you are sitting by the fire with Watson while he tells you all about it.
I really like the new adaption of Sherlock Holmes with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law. It wasn't 100% faithful to the books, but I thought it was surprisingly accurate. When I first saw who was going to play Sherlock, I thought it was the worst choice they could have made. In the books, Sherlock Holmes is tall and thin. He has long white fingers and a long nose and piercing eyes. Robert Downey Jr. is very short and stocky with tanned skin.
I like him a lot better after seeing the movie. He played Sherlock well, even if he is not exactly as he is in the book. People think the movie is not accurate because Sherlock is too active, but in the book, Sherlock is a skilled boxer, he knows martial arts, he fights with a bow staff, he runs around all over the city in outlandish disguises, and when he is on the case he is described as a bloodhound on the chase, active, quick and energetic.
When he is not on a case, he lounges around at home, feeling lethargic and playing his violin. I think they captured the two sides of his personality pretty well in the movie. It was mostly his energetic side, because nobody wants to watch a movie where the main character sits around being depressed. : )
I think my favorite thing about the movie is the way they portrayed Watson, and his relationship with Holmes. They are such good friends they can each tell what the other is thinking, but they are complete opposites in personality. They compliment each other.

Of course, the movie has some things in it that I don't like. There are some inappropriate moments and some violence. What I mainly didn't like the first time I watched it was how dark it was. The plot has some supposed magic in it that is pretty dark. I had heard before I watched it that it is not really magical, that it is just a hoax, but I still was pretty nervous at a few scenes. I wasn't sure if I wanted to watch it and I wondered if I had heard right. (I had.)
When I watched it again, knowing the ending, I enjoyed it a lot more. I was able to laugh at the funny parts and it seemed a lot less scary the second time through. The first time I didn't think it was as funny or good because I was nervous about it. It is not a movie for everyone, however, so if you haven't seen it you may want to look up a review first.
If the movie doesn't sound like it's to your taste, at least read the books! They are two completely different things, anyway, and the books are amazing. I have read them all several times, and occasionally read a random selection from the short stories when I'm in between books.

The Lord of the Rings

I have read the book series twice. The first time, I was in my young teens and I read the trilogy in under two weeks because I just couldn't put it down. I remember reading the part about Shelob's lair at one in the morning, because I thought Frodo was going to die and I couldn't stay in suspense all night.
I really do like the books. They are well written and have such a huge background to them. Tolkien didn't just create a world big enough to tell his story in. He created a solid world, messy and spread out, most of it having nothing to do with the plotline he follows in the books. When you read, you feel the grandness of history.
Of course, there were parts I didn't like. The council of Elrond was long and drawn out and I skimmed over that whole chapter the first time I read it. The hugeness of the history behind the story can get tedious as well. I just want to hear about the characters I have come to love, I don't want or need to hear irrelevant details about the history of Middle Earth.
I am glad I read it, though, and I may read it a third time someday.
The movies are also very good. Looking at them now, with all of our recent advances in animation technology, the graphics at times seem very old fashioned and fake looking. However, they were excellent graphics when the movie came out a few years ago, the best in the business. I'm amazed by the scale of this movie and the settings and the costumes. The three movies were filmed in a row, really as one big movie, and I would venture to say that it may be the most well made movie of all time.
They are a little too violent for my tastes sometimes, but the characters are wonderful.
Now, do I think it's allegorical?
In my opinion, the story in its entirety cannot be translated into an entire allegory. You can't say firmly that Frodo's journey represents a Christian's walk or that Gandalf is the savior figure. However, individual parts of the story can be taken as small allegories. I wouldn't even use the word allegory. I would say that there are truths hidden in this story that can be applied to other areas of life.
The importance of selflessness, the fact that the ends do not justify the means and you cannot use evil to fight evil, the power of loyalty, these are all true things that are shown in this plot. I believe that Tolkien did not intend for the story to be allegorical, but what makes the story so epic and beautiful is the use of these universal, God-created truths.

18th century fashion

Here is a very interesting interactive website I found about clothes from 1700. You click through the different layers of a typical woman's wardrobe and when you put your mouse over the pictures, it has information about each type of garment.
Explore the website, too, they also have one for men's clothes in 1700, and a few from 1770, including a little girl's outfit. There are other time periods on there too.
After you've looked at that website, play this game. You have to put the clothes on the 18th century girl in the correct order.
So there's a little bit about 18th century fashion, now, what do I think of it? Hmmm... An entire century of fashion is a pretty broad category to have a solid opinion on.
18th century fashion looks uncomfortable.
It doesn't look practical for doing anything in.
Plus, they hardly ever washed their clothes, which is really gross.
On the other hand, some of the clothing from that period was just beautiful and intricate and amazing. They were things of quality.
The way we dress now, with mass produced t-shirts and jeans, has so much less character than clothing did in the 18th century. Each item took a long time to finish by hand, and each item was unique. There was no danger of showing up somewhere wearing the exact same thing as someone else.
I also love that there were social standards for clothes. Today we seem to have no standards. Everyone can pretty much wear whatever they want, which many times is not much. Not too long ago it was considered immodest to show your ankles.
So, what do I think about 18th century fashion? I think it is a beautiful thing to learn about and even wear occasionally, but I would not like to wear it all of the time. College and Prince Caspian

Well, I'm a girl, and I'm in college. : )
As for my "official" stance on it as a general thing, I am just fine with any girl's decision not to go to college. In fact, I almost decided not to go to college. Staying at home is great and you can still learn at home. However, if you feel like you should go to college, or if you just love learning and really want to go to college (like me), by all means, go for it!
-What do you think about the movie Prince Caspian (if you've watched it, that is!)?
Unfortunately I did see that movie. There were a few parts I liked, but there were many things wrong with it.
I'll start with the negative.
Prince Caspian. They just made a really bad decision when they cast him.
First of all, he was far, far too old to play the part. In the book, Caspian is a young boy, a little younger than Edmund. That's the reason Peter fights for him at the end, because they are afraid the king won't take such a young boy seriously. With him being so old, that part of the plot makes no sense at all. Also, if he is a young man in his twenties, why is Mraz still getting away with ruling for him? He is old enough to rule his own country .
Secondly, what's up with that weird, fake sounding Spanish accent? That accent drove me crazy throughout the whole movie.
Peter. I was so disappointed in Peter. In the book he is a hero. He is mature, because he lived a full life in Narnia, and he is wise and strong. When he gets back into Narnia, and pulls out his sword, he can feel the kingliness and wisdom coming back to him. When he goes to help Caspian, the first thing he says to him is that he is not there to try to take Caspian's place, but to help him get back his rightful authority.
In the movie, Peter is a jerk. He is self-centered, he makes stupid decisions and doesn't listen to other people, and he does try to undermine Prince Caspian's authority. In the movie, his attitude towards Caspian is more like, I'm here now, and I'm wonderful, so get out of the way while I clean up the mess you stupidly made. He endangers, and loses, the lives of his followers, because he is too stubborn and self-righteous to admit that he made a mistake in storming the castle.
I really don't like Peter in Prince Caspian, and I loved him in the first movie.
The plot. They made some really strange decisions with the plot in this movie.
Susan and Prince Caspian in love? Eew. Like I said, in the book, he is a little boy. Why add this side plot when it can't go anywhere? Susan is not in the next movie, and Prince Caspian is supposed to fall in love with Ramandu's daughter in the next one. Now movie watchers will feel weird about that because they have invested their feelings into a Susan and Caspian relationship.
Storming the castle. It just wasn't needed. There is a big battle scene at the end, too. The whole castle sequence was not in the book, because in the book, Peter would have never done anything so stupid. It is a really scary scene, too, especially the end. We skipped the end of the battle when my younger siblings watched it. It took us a long time to even decide to let them watch it, because the movie in general was much darker than the first one.
I think I have ranted enough, don't you? Now I will share the only thing I liked about the movie.
Edmund. : )
I love Edmund. I liked him in the first movie, too, even when he was on the wrong side. He wasn't really evil, he just gave in to temptation. He was a sinner. We are all sinners and 'fall short of the glory of God', so anyone should be able to relate to his character. And redeemed Edmund is the best character in all of Narnia, even the movies.
In this movie, he is right there by Peter's side, helping him and fighting for him. He is the one who gets rid of the White Witch, when Peter was going to give in to her. Edmund has been there, and he knows what the White Witch can do to you. He was not going to go there again. When the others don't believe that Lucy has seen Aslan on the cliff, Edmund sticks up for her. Once again, it's because he has truly learned his lesson and repented of what he did. The first time he didn't believe Lucy (about there being a wood in the wardrobe), she turned out to be right, and things didn't turn out so well for him.
I felt like Edmund was pushed into the background of this movie. Peter and Caspian take center stage, but every part Edmund has is selfless and heroic. If you watch the movie again, pay attention to Edmund. Instead of focusing on Peter, watch him and the little things that he does in the background. Edmund is the only true hero in this movie.

Results
Well, I only got 6 comments, but it gave me a good idea of what you want.
It seems several of you like my random rambling thoughts the best. That is my favorite type of post to write, because I have always had strong opinions on certain things, and I tend to like to talk on and on about a subject once I've gotten started. Blogging has given me a structured format to do this in.
A couple of people liked "Ideas for you" best, and a few liked "Sewing and fashion" best, so I think up until now on the blog, I've had the ratio about right. Mostly my own thoughts, occasionally sewing and fashion posts or other things.
So, for the summer, the blog will stay mainly the same, though I may have a few more idea posts and writing posts. : )

Vote!
Now that school is out for the summer I think I need to start posting more consistantly. So far on this blog I have just been posting about whatever I want, but I would really like to know what my followers would like to read about. So, please, comment on this post and let me know. If there is another post of mine that you like better than any of these examples, tell me in the comments! I really would like to know everyone's opinion. Robin Hood
I watched the first season of Robin Hood this weekend! It was really good. I was a little worried at first because there's a mildly inappropriate scene near the beginning, but it was the only thing of that kind (that I can remember) in the series. It was surprisingly clean compared to most shows. It had a lot of action/adventure type fighting in it, but most of the real violence was only threatened and never carried out.
I liked the modern feel the show has. Some of the costumes are very modern looking, but usually they look like they could have been found in that time period. For example, Robin Hood wears a green hooded sweatshirt. The cut looks like a modern hoodie, but it's a rough looking woven fabric. I love that.
My sister has given me two lovely pillowcases to make a (hopefully) lovely apron out of, like the one I made for myself in this post. Tomorrow afternoon I will try to get to work on that. I've had a cold this weekend and I have to go to work tomorrow morning, so I hope that won't wear me out too much.

Nancy Drew dress
I bought this dress at the thrift store for maybe $4.
It makes me think of Nancy Drew and mystery and rainy days and locked doors and hidden rooms. It feels like it was made to have adventures in. It was an overcast and mysterious afternoon, so it was the perfect time to take pictures of this dress.
Here are the shoes I was wearing with it. I also bought these at a thrift store a few weeks ago for $3. You can't tell in the picture, but they have a subtle plaid pattern with tiny pinstripes of yellow and red. The plaid of the dress has little red stripes too, so they match really well.

Tomorrow
Tomorrow I have a day completely off from going anywhere, which hasn't happened in quite awhile. I am planning on getting up in the morning and cleaning my room. It is really messy and I hate it, because my room is so pretty when it's clean.
Yesterday I bought a few new things at the thrift store that I am excited about. A new summer purse and a dress I am calling my Nancy Drew dress. Hopefully tomorrow I will remember to take pictures of them to show you. Maybe if I get my room done soon enough I will even have an entire Nancy Drew inspired fashion post. We'll see.
Something else I need to get to work on is my series of posts for the Peter Pan event. I love Peter Pan and I am really excited, and I have to get the posts done pretty soon because I am going to be out of town during that very week. I still want to participate, so I am going to get my posts all ready and have my sister get on and publish them for me. : )

Catching up
I just thought I should check in since I haven't posted in four days. Sorry about that!
I finished the semester completely on Wednesday! I am so glad to have a break. It's nice to be able to relax. I keep feeling guilty like I should be doing homework, and then I remember that I don't have any homework!
I don't want to sound like I'm bragging, but I really want to share with you guys because I'm excited... I got A's in all four of my classes! I'm so happy about that. I thought I might be getting a B in history, because the last quiz was really hard, but I pulled through in the final.
On Thursday I slept in, which was lovely, then I took my brother Kevin to his Bible study. They meet at Hy-vee, because they have a salad bar and other buffet food there. I sat at a table with some coffee and worked on my book while I waited for him. I came up with a whole new idea for part of the plot that was giving me trouble. I may not end up using it, but at least it got me started thinking of possibilities.
Friday our whole family went to the amusement park! It was so fun. I am not really a big ride person, so I didn't go on very many things, but I loved the ones I did go on. They have a new roller coaster there that I rode because it didn't have a very big hill at the beginning. I don't like big hills.
I don't know what I was expecting, but I did not know that it would be so intense. It went really, really fast! I didn't scream the entire time, I just had my mouth open in shock. : )
After that long day we came home and cleaned up and Kevin and I went to a friends house to watch movies and play games. I was tired, but I love spending time with my friends, so it was worth it.
And today, I went to work from 8:00 to 5:00, then came home and got on the computer.
So now you are all caught up. I will try to start posting consistently again. I also have it written on my schedule to work out the details of my blog event. I know I have been telling you I'll do this for a few months, but be patient, I'll stop procrastinating eventually. : )

Writing group
The writing group meeting went well, and I've officially taken over. It was a fiction writer's support group put on by the library where I work, but it got cancelled, so I am starting a community writing group on the same night at the same time, once a month. Next month we are going to talk about plot planning, because I am trying to plan that book I mentioned a few posts ago. We are also supposed to bring a synopsis of our story. I'm not sure if I will be ready with a synopsis. Soon I will post about the plot and see if I can condense it into a paragraph or so.

Busy busy
Well, the math final is over! I feel like I did a pretty good job. I went slowly and made sure I wasn't forgetting anything. Of course, I always feel like I did fine and then it turns out that I missed a few. I always forget about the little details. I will get the results on Thursday or Friday with my total grade for the whole class!
Tonight I need to write two "critical analysis'" for English class. I had forgotten about these. They can be on short stories or articles, and they aren't too hard for me to write once I find a good story or article. I prefer doing the short story ones actually. Does anyone know of any really good short stories?
Also, tonight and tomorrow morning, I will be studying for my history final. Luckily, this one is not comprehensive. It just covers the last few weeks of class, so it should all still be fresh in my head.
This evening is the last meeting of the writing group at the library. I think I am going to start a community writing group at the same place and time. It would really be the same thing, just not an official library event, and I would be in charge. I was going to make a poster announcing it and put it up on the bulliten board today, but I was studying late last night for this math final.
I might post later about my progress. I hope hearing about my school work isn't boring you to tears. It actually really helps to tell you about it. It's like complaining to a good friend.

Stylish blogger
I was awarded this by my sister Faith, thanks sis!
I'm supposed to list five interesting things about myself.
1. I am terrified of spiders.
2. I have a black belt in Tae Kwon Do.
3. I want to be a writer.
4. I just won the board game, Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader?
5. I am supposed to be studying for a math final right now.
I guess I should go study now. The final is tomorrow, and it is one of the ones I am really nervous about. It's a comprehensive test, which means that I have to remember everything we've learned in the whole semester.

Happy Mother's Day
Here are just five things out of all that I appreciate about my mom.
1. She is never too busy to give you a long hug when you need it.
2. Whenever she is up before me in the morning she makes me a cup of coffee. I am not a morning person and I usually stumble around half awake when I don't get any coffee.
3. She is not afraid to laugh and have fun. We have so much fun playing Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader? and Catch Phrase.
4. She listens to me. She even asks for my advice sometimes. It's nice to know that someone cares about what you have to say.
5. She has taught all of us how to learn. I was homeschooled all the way through high school. When I was in high school, I didn't feel like I did very much "real" school. I just learned about what I was interested in and read a lot of books. Now that I'm in college, I've realized that what I was learning in high school was how to learn. I haven't memorized a lot of historical dates, but I know what life was like in different periods in history, thanks to reading historical fiction. And more importantly, I know how to find out anything I need to know and how to convey that information through the written word.
Somehow Mom taught me that during my years of schooling, while I thought I was just having fun and reading about anything I wanted.
Thanks Mom for everything you do for us! I love you.

Summer is almost here!
I'm sorry I've been so absent from both of my blogs. I have finals starting on Monday so I have to study. I'll be back full force starting on Thursday, which is when I'll be done with school altogether! Yay! Well, at least done until next semester, but I'm trying not to think about that.
Things I'm going to do when I'm done with school:
Make some Peter Pan posts for the Wickfield blog event,
Catch up on writing my picture books (I will probably be six books behind by then!),
Make a button and some guidelines and set the official date for my hairstyles and accessories blog event,
Clean my room,
Sew a few summer skirts,
Write the first draft of my book.

Yellow dress
I made this yellow dress yesterday with part of a yellow sheet I got at a thrift store. I didn't use a pattern. I also made the shirt underneath. I just cut out a rough t-shirt shape and sewed the sides and shoulders.
The back is so much nicer than the last doll dress I made. It is still pinned shut in the back because I didn't have a chance to sew on hooks and eyes, and there are some pencil marks on it from trying to mark where the sleeves should go.
This dress was created for Doll Fashion Week over at Iradessa.

Hello there
I sewed that yellow doll dress last night! It is almost as cute as I imagined it, and it's almost done. All I have to do now is sew on a few hooks and eyes. Tonight, as soon as I get home from school, I will take some pictures of it and post them.
I haven't forgotten about my blog event! The poll has been closed for a few days and I still haven't announced the winner. It looks like hairstyles wins by five votes! So exciting! I know you all have such great hairstyle ideas.
Here's the thing though... I don't have very many hairstyle ideas. I always wear my hair the same way. So I have decided to combine the two categories and do hairstyles and accessories, because I do have a lot of accessory ideas.

Here's the thing though... I don't have very many hairstyle ideas. I always wear my hair the same way. So I have decided to combine the two categories and do hairstyles and accessories, because I do have a lot of accessory ideas.
This is just an announcement of what we will be doing, I haven't made a button or set a firm date yet. It will probably be late June.

To do
Here is an example of the to-do list that has been swirling around in my head all day.
Sew American girl doll dress,
Finish "The Library Snake Sneaks In," picture book,
Write another picture book,
Think about Peter Pan related blog posts,
Do math homework,
Finish writing short story analysis paper for English class,
Start studying for finals,
And clean my room.
Right now I am sitting down to watch The Young Victoria (again), and sew a cute yellow doll dress. I hope it turns out the way I want it to.

Regency doll dress
Here are pictures of a doll dress I made several years ago. It was the second one I ever made, and I sewed it entirely by hand. It's kind of interesting to look at it now, because I've gained a lot of skill since then. In these pictures, the fabric looks white, but actually it's sort of a light golden color.
If you're wondering why there's a big ugly patch of fabric on the back, it's because I forgot to leave room to overlap the sides to add hooks and eyes, so I had to put on this flap thing. It turned out really big and crooked because I was sewing it by hand.
I crocheted this shawl to go with it.
The inside is unfinished because I didn't know to fold under my hems or anything, so it's all fraying now.
Still, I think it looks pretty good for something I made up. I didn't have a pattern.
And with the shawl, it looks even better because it covers up the ugly back.
So there's my doll dress failure, hopefully the ones I am going to make this week will be better!
