Johannes Vermeer

Woman with a Pearl Necklace

The Girl with a Pearl Earring

The Lacemaker

Lady Writing a Letter with Her Maid

The Milkmaid

Mistress and Maid

These are some of my favorite works by Vermeer. His paintings have such a sense of calm, but at the same time mystery. He captures a moment so perfectly, but you are left wondering exactly what he has captured. Mistress and Maid, for example, leaves me trying to guess what is in the letter. The woman looks unsure or even afraid to take it.
Please take some time and look at these, don't just skim over them. His complete works can be found on EssentialVermeer.com if you'd like to see more.
Which painting do you like the best?

I love the Milkmaid and the one of the woman writing a letter. I absolutely adore the way Vermeer paints light. It's amazing! It looks so real and pure, it's astonishing.

One of my favorites has ALWAYS been The Milkmaid. I just love how the person looks so like a painting and yet so realistic! It's weird!

Ok, so... What's up with the yellow loose suit-shirt thingy? It shows up in five of his paintings (including the first AND last one you showed here)! It's very interesting!

I know, it's interesting that he put it into so many paintings. It was a fur trimmed day jacket owned by his wife.
