Bookish

The school semester is nearly over, so for the last few days I've been compiling a list of books and stories I want to read over the summer break. Any suggestions? I'm mostly considering older science fiction like H.G. Wells and Jules Verne.

I would also like to read more Agatha Christie. I went through a phase in my younger teenage years where I read every Agatha Christie novel I could get my hands on, which was quite a few. Her twisty endings tricked me every time. Now, I can still remember some of her plots, but I don't know what the books are called. It's difficult to track down a book when the only thing you know is the solution to the mystery.

Sometimes when I'm alone I read out loud to myself, mostly poetry or Shakespeare. It is one of my favorite things to do. "The Raven" and "The Lady of Shalott" are two of the best. I think I'm pretty good at reading out loud, but I can't do it in front of people--I get dizzy and my stomache feels like I'm on a roller coaster and I start shaking uncontrollably. That's something I need to work on.

HIGHLY recommend H G Well's Invisible Man and The Time Machine. War of the Worlds, not as good...Dr Moreau, just plain scary. Most of the Jules Vernes can be difficult reading, but Around the World in 80 Days is very readable; Paris the 20th Century is fascinating. The Lost World, by A C Doyle, is sci-fi, and very funny and exciting. I'll let you know if I think of any more...I love classic sci-fi. ;)

I know it's an "easy book" but my favorite book is "Arena" by Karen Hancock... I'm pretty sure we talked about it at WV, but I would HIGHLY recommend it if you haven't read it yet!! :D

I love poetry. I don't know of very many science fiction books, but one that I really like was called Enchantress from the Stars. I enjoyed it a lot!

U love "The lady of Shalott". Tennyson is one of my favorite poets! My Other favorite poems is the Highwayman by Alfred Noyes. I love the poem from beginning to end! Loreena Mckennitt put the poem to song and music, and it is amazing!

Here's one idea for your Summer reading. Just this morning I discovered some old detective novels by Auguste Groner. Take a look at some here: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=Auguste+Groner&x=14&y=18

They kind of remind me of Sherlock Holmes. I'm not recommending these books, since I haven't read them yet... but they sure look interesting.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

@Marian- I have read The Invisible Man (and it was fantastic in both senses of the word) and I've put The Time Machine on my list. I liked War of the Worlds... a little creepy, but interesting.

@Georgianna Penn- Ah, Mr. Dickens. I've read several of his but none of the more famous ones. Perheps I should do so.

@Michelle- I remember! I thought it sounded cool when you told me about it but then I forgot the name!

@Elizabeth- Yes, The Highwayman is another great one! So sad, but so beautiful.

@Tarissa- Those look really interesting, thanks for the link. I will check them out.
