Rain, rain, don't go away

There was a thunderstorm this morning. I love thunderstorms, especially during the day. Unfortunately, I've been sick, so I slept in. I still got to hear the thunderstorm, but my favorite thing is to sit on the kitchen couch by the window with a cup of coffee and watch the wind blow the pin oaks in the front yard. Or, to sit upstairs somewhere so I can hear the rain on the roof while I read a book.

Speaking (writing?) of books, you may have noticed a new button at the top of my blog. It is called "The Great Book List," and is a list of books that I feel like I ought to read before going to school for literature. These are books I will probably encounter in my classes, and I think a familiarity with them will save me time later. I am currently reading The Great Gatsby, and I must say it is a lot more entertaining than I would have expected, and the style is more modern than I thought.

Oooh, rain and thunderstorms. I love reading or writing during a thunderstorm. ^.^

I read The Great Gatsby, earlier this year and I actually really enjoyed it. The word-pictures that are painted so vividly and realistically make the story very unique and engaging even in its modernness (I'm a stickler for older literature and seldom stick my nose in modern novels :P).

Hope you get well soon!

Oh, I love Heart of Darkness...the prose alone made me a Conrad fan! I'm reading Beowulf right now; it's pretty difficult stuff, but I think I'm getting the gist of it.

@Katie:
Yes, the descriptions are my favorite part so far! So clear and lovely, I can just see them.

@Marian:
Good to know Heart of Darkness is a good book! I wasn't sure if I would like it, now I'm looking forward to it. How many of the books on my list have you read?

Not many...about eleven or twelve, and a few I only read half-way. ;) Shakespeare and Greek classics are still on my to-read list. Frankly, I'm intimidated by the size of Don Quixote and the writing style of Walden, but I hope to read them someday. :) War and Peace, too...someone recommended it to me recently.

Rain is one of my favorite things in the whole world... I've written so many stanzas of poetry about rain.

How many ways can one describe the wonderful noises, sights, and atmosphere encountered during a storm? I'm not sure yet, but intend to find out.

Hi Jane! Yes, I am planning on starting the story thing again. I just haven't been able to get my act together recently. Once I get myself together, I'll let you know! And thanks, I'll check out that website! :D

The Great Gatsby is on my near-future list as well. Of course, the bad thing about that book is that it's quoted and referenced so often that it's nearly impossible to avoid spoilers. Ah well. I'm sure it's good even with the ending already revealed countless times. :p

I'm often surprised by how modern and entertaining a lot of the classics really are! Off to check your list out now.

PS. Thanks for finding that dratted cat!!
